Yes, we can. However, we encourage clients to have their Canadian returns handled by a Canadian accountant whenever feasible.

We will review your situation and advise you if both tax returns should be managed by the same firm. Factors that may influence the decision include, the existence of U.S. source income and foreign tax credits, cross-border employment, or immigration/emigration.

Absolutely. We are more than willing to collaborate with financial advisors, lawyers, or other U.S. and Canadian accountants to provide comprehensive service to our mutual clients.

We take the protection of your personal information seriously. We only engage with world-class software providers with robust data protection, including Microsoft, Canopy, and Wolters Kluwer.

Sensitive client information is not sent via email; instead, we upload such information to your secure client portal.

We schedule the preparation of tax returns based on our clients’ tax filing obligations and estimated tax liabilities.

Clients for whom we prepare Canadian tax returns or who are expecting to owe U.S. tax are filed in March and April.

U.S. taxpayers living abroad have a tax filing deadline of June 15th with an option to file an automatic extension to extend their deadline to October 15th. Utilizing these extensions allow us to manage our workload effectively and ensure the tax return is complete and accurate.

It is important to note that there are no negative implications associated with filing the extension. In fact, many U.S. taxpayers routinely take advantage of this extension to allow sufficient time for the accurate completion of their tax returns.

We schedule the preparation of the tax returns early in the season and let each client know their scheduled time so that all information can be provided in advance.

Yes, we e-file both Canadian and U.S. tax returns whenever possible.

Darrell is a Canadian Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) and a U.S. enrolled agent (EA), allowing representation of our clients before the IRS and state tax authorities. He has been practicing in cross-border tax for more than a decade.

While every return varies, a general summary for a U.S. Federal Income Tax Return and FinCEN Form 114 (FBAR) based on complexity is as follows:
Simple: $450-$650 CAD,
Moderate: $650-$1,250 CAD
Complex: $1,250 CAD and up

Factors influencing the complexity of the tax return include:
• Whether single or jointly filing
• Type of investment accounts held (taxable, TFSA, RESPs, etc.)
• The types of investments held. For instance, Canadian mutual funds and ETFs may require additional disclosure forms (search “PFIC for US taxpayers in Canada”)
• Whether foreign asset disclosures are required (e.g., Forms 8938, 5471, and 3520)

If you are immigrating or emigrating form Canada, your tax filings will be much more complex, It is essential these filings are prepared correctly as significant penalties may apply for failure to file certain forms. We will provide customized fee estimated for these situations.

We will provide estimated fees ranges for all new clients that both parties agree to before we start our work. It is our goal to keep fees as low as possible. In fact, we will often make recommendations to simplify your tax situation to keep compliance fees low.
